Iran’s ‘Malakout’ awarded at Celluloid Screams filmfest

Iran’s animated short piece ‘Malakout’ has been awarded at the Celluloid Screams: Sheffield Horror Film Festival in the UK.

Iranian media reports said ‘Malakout’ received the Bronze Jury Award-Best Short Film at the British festival.

Directed by Farnoush Abedi, the film is about a pianist who tries to bring his wife back to life, but a related deal awakens the devil inside him.

“Music was his passion. Love was his masterpiece,” a synopsis for ‘Malakout’ reads.

The latest prize brings the number of awards grabbed by Abedi’s film to 43.

The film was awarded at the 2020 Wolves Independent International Film Festival in Lithuania.

‘Malakout’ was also named the best short film at the Cryptshow Festival in Spain and garnered two awards at the Florida Animation Festival of the US.

The animation also received an honorary diploma at the Silk Road International Film Festival in Ireland and the best animation award at the Black Country Horror Shorts Film Festival in the UK.

The Celluloid Screams: Sheffield Horror Film Festival is an annual event that showcases “the best in classic and contemporary horror cinema”, the event’s website reads.

“Taking place each October at Sheffield's Showroom Cinema, Celluloid Screams has become one of the highlights of the UK Film Festival Calendar,” according to an online film submission platform.
